| My name is Katherine Ellis, and I love to draw. I work with colored pencil, watercolor, ink, and graphite on artist's grade paper supports. I am currently working in graphite on a variety of paper supports. "Mason" at the left and "Wylie" directly below were both done on Arches hot press paper, a lovely medium to work in. |
| I have temporarily "retired" my colored pencils and I'm focusing on doing dog portraits in graphite. I'm currently between projects, so I'm casting about, looking for handsome dogs to draw. Got a cute dog? Drop me a line! | |

| This piece is a rough sketch of a Portuguese Water Dog, again done in graphite on rough sketch paper. I enjoyed the challenge, but found the dog's coloring to be particularly difficult. I was also frustrated because I wasn't able to show the eyes, which I take pride in doing. However, as a learning experience, it was an extremely valuable exercise. |
| The piece at the right, also in graphite, is entitled, "Sleeping Dogs Lie". It is the beginning in what I hope will be a series of dog portraits in graphite. | |
|
| This piece is also graphite on paper. It is entitled, "Flatcoats Rule" and is of a stunning Flatcoated Retriever. These graphite sketches are a lot of fun for me as I learn how to portray dogs with long hair, dogs with short hair, and dogs with and without eyes! |

Fruits&Vegetables Gallery
Luscious, juicy cherries, ripe, succulent oranges--these are all fodder for my artistic efforts. Click on the image to see more offerings from my Fruits&Vegetables Gallery.

Still Life Gallery
I love to draw still lifes and never tire of looking at shiny or reflective objects. I find it fascinating to see the way that colors can bounce and reflect and change on the various surfaces in a still life. When I draw something that was a gift from a loved one, it brings back cherished memories for me, and I try to let those feelings shine through in what I draw. And when I can't find anything lying around my studio, I go raid the pantry!
